Éxodo 20: Los diez mandamientos.
1 Dios habló y dio a conocer todas estas palabras:
2 «Yo soy el Señor tu Dios. Yo te saqué de Egipto, del país donde eras esclavo.
3 »No tengas otros dioses además de mí.[a]
4 No te hagas ninguna imagen, ni nada que guarde semejanza con lo que hay arriba en el cielo, ni con lo que hay abajo en la tierra, ni con lo que hay en las aguas debajo de la tierra. 5 No te postres delante de ellos ni los adores. Yo, el Señor tu Dios, soy un Dios celoso. Cuando los padres son malvados y me odian, yo castigo a sus hijos hasta la tercera y cuarta generación. 6 Por el contrario, cuando me aman fielmente y cumplen mis mandamientos, les muestro mi amor por mil generaciones.
7 No uses el nombre del Señor tu Dios en vano. Yo, el Señor, no tendré por inocente a quien se atreva a usar mi nombre en vano.
8 Acuérdate del día sábado para santificarlo. 9 Trabaja seis días y haz en ellos todo lo que tengas que hacer, 10 pero el día séptimo será un día de reposo para honrar al Señor tu Dios. No hagas en ese día ningún trabajo, ni tampoco tu hijo, ni tu hija, ni tu esclavo, ni tu esclava, ni tus animales, ni tampoco los extranjeros que vivan en tus ciudades.[b] 11 Porque en seis días hizo el Señor los cielos y la tierra, el mar y todo lo que hay en ellos, y descansó el séptimo día. Por eso el Señor bendijo y consagró el día de reposo.
12 Honra a tu padre y a tu madre, para que disfrutes de una larga vida en la tierra que te da el Señor tu Dios.
13 No mates.
14 No cometas adulterio.
15 No robes.
16 No des falso testimonio en contra de tu prójimo.
17 No codicies la casa de tu prójimo, ni codicies su esposa, ni su esclavo, ni su esclava, ni su buey, ni su asno, ni nada que le pertenezca».
Reacción temerosa de los israelitas
18 Ante ese espectáculo de truenos y relámpagos, de sonidos de trompeta y de la montaña envuelta en humo, los israelitas temblaban de miedo y se mantenían a distancia. 19 Así que suplicaron a Moisés:
—Háblanos tú y te escucharemos. Si Dios nos habla, seguramente moriremos.
20 —No tengan miedo —les respondió Moisés—. Dios ha venido a ponerlos a prueba, para que sientan temor de él y no pequen.
21 Entonces Moisés se acercó a la densa oscuridad en la que estaba Dios, pero los israelitas se mantuvieron a distancia.
El altar de piedra
22 El Señor ordenó a Moisés:
«Diles lo siguiente a los israelitas: “Ustedes mismos han oído que les he hablado desde el cielo. 23 No hagan dioses de plata o de oro para adorarlos como a mí. 24 Háganme un altar de tierra y ofrézcanme sobre él sus holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión, sus ovejas y sus toros. Yo vendré al lugar donde les pida invocar mi nombre y los bendeciré. 25 Si me hacen un altar de piedra, no lo construyan con piedras labradas, pues las herramientas profanan la piedra. 26 Y no pongan escalones a mi altar, no sea que al subir se les vea la desnudez”.

La ley condena. Ocho de los diez mandamientos comienzan con la palabra “no.” Esto nos ha hecho creer que hay mucha negatividad en ellos. Nos preguntamos, la ley: ¿limita o protege? Al darnos el primer mandamiento que nos indica la exclusividad del Creador nos libra del error de buscar otros dioses o de hacer dioses a seres humanos, como los pueden nuestros hijos o a prácticas, como un deporte o hobby, que, aunque buenas toman el primer lugar en nuestras vidas. El segundo nos revela que somos seres espirituales, librándonos de adorar imágenes o a la creación en lugar del Creador; el tercero, “no tomarás el nombre del Señor en vano, nos enseña reverencia librándonos de referirnos a la Deidad livianamente, el cuarto protege nuestra salud física y mental, proveyendo descanso, el quinto preserva el orden y la unidad y la integridad de la familia con el respeto a los padres, el sexto – no matarás – protege el respeto a la vida. Al prohibir el adulterio está protegiendo la intimidad y la exclusividad de la vida matrimonial. El octavo – no hurtaras – protege nuestros bienes y establece el respeto a la propiedad privada. Al decirnos: no mentirás está protegiendo nuestra reputación y, finalmente, quiere librarnos de la envidia y la codicia como raíz de muchos males, y nos enseña a ser positivos estando contentos con lo que tenemos. Señor, gracias por darnos la ley, ella revela algo de Tu naturaleza y esencia.
Exodus 20: The Ten Commandments.
1 And God spoke all these words:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.
3 “You shall have no other gods before[a] me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7 “You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.
8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
18 When the people saw the thunder and lightning and heard the trumpet and saw the mountain in smoke, they trembled with fear. They stayed at a distance 19 and said to Moses, “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.”
20 Moses said to the people, “Do not be afraid. God has come to test you, so that the fear of God will be with you to keep you from sinning.”
21 The people remained at a distance, while Moses approached the thick darkness where God was.
Idols and Altars
22 Then the Lord said to Moses, “Tell the Israelites this: ‘You have seen for yourselves that I have spoken to you from heaven: 23 Do not make any gods to be alongside me; do not make for yourselves gods of silver or gods of gold.
24 “‘Make an altar of earth for me and sacrifice on it your burnt offerings and fellowship offerings, your sheep and goats and your cattle. Wherever I cause my name to be honored, I will come to you and bless you. 25 If you make an altar of stones for me, do not build it with dressed stones, for you will defile it if you use a tool on it. 26 And do not go up to my altar on steps, or your private parts may be exposed.’

The law condemns. Eight of the Ten Commandments begin with the word “no.” This has led us to believe that there is a lot of negativity in them. We ask ourselves, does the law limit or protect? By giving us the first commandment that indicates the exclusivity of the Creator, He frees us from the error of seeking other gods or of making gods out of human beings, as our children can, or of practices, such as a sport or hobby, which, although good, take the first place in our lives. The second reveals to us that we are spiritual beings, freeing us from worshipping images or creation instead of the Creator; the third, “Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain,” teaches us reverence by relieving us from referring to the Deity lightly, the fourth protects our physical and mental health, providing rest, the fifth, preserves order and unity and the integrity of the family with respect for parents, the sixth—thou shalt not kill—protects respect for life. By prohibiting adultery, you are protecting the intimacy and exclusivity of married life. The eighth – thou shalt not steal – protects our property and establishes respect for private property. By telling us: Thou shalt not lie, he is protecting our reputation and, finally, he wants to free us from envy and greed as the root of many evils, and teaches us to be positive by being content with what we have. Lord, thank You for giving us the law, it reveals something of Your nature and essence.
