Amós 2: Juicio contra Israel.
1 ASI ha dicho Jehová: Por tres pecados de Moab, y por el cuarto, no desviaré su castigo; porque quemó los huesos del rey de Idumea hasta tornarlos en cal.
2 Y meteré fuego en Moab, y consumirá los palacios de Chêrioth: y morirá Moab en alboroto, en estrépito y sonido de trompeta.
3 Y quitaré el juez de en medio de él, y mataré con él á todos sus príncipes, dice Jehová.
4 Así ha dicho Jehová: Por tres pecados de Judá, y por el cuarto, no desviaré su castigo; porque menospreciaron la ley de Jehová, y no guardaron sus ordenanzas; é hiciéronlos errar sus mentiras, en pos de las cuales anduvieron sus padres.
5 Meteré por tanto fuego en Judá, el cual consumirá los palacios de Jerusalem.
6 Así ha dicho Jehová: Por tres pecados de Israel, y por el cuarto, no desviaré su castigo; porque vendieron por dinero al justo, y al pobre por un par de zapatos:
7 Que anhelan porque haya polvo de tierra sobre la cabeza de los pobres, y tuercen el camino de los humildes: y el hombre y su padre entraron á la misma moza, profanando mi santo nombre.
8 Y sobre las ropas empeñadas se acuestan junto á cualquier altar; y el vino de los penados beben en la casa de sus dioses.
9 Y yo destruí delante de ellos al Amorrheo, cuya altura era como la altura de los cedros, y fuerte como un alcornoque; y destruí su fruto arriba, sus raíces abajo.
10 Y yo os hice á vosotros subir de la tierra de Egipto, y os traje por el desierto cuarenta años, para que poseyeseis la tierra del Amorrheo.
11 Y levanté de vuestros hijos para profetas, y de vuestros mancebos para que fuesen Nazareos. ¿No es esto así, dice Jehová, hijos de Israel?
12 Mas vosotros disteis de beber vino á los Nazareos; y á los profetas mandasteis, diciendo: No profeticéis.
13 Pues he aquí, yo os apretaré en vuestro lugar, como se aprieta el carro lleno de haces;
14 Y la huída perecerá del ligero, y el fuerte no esforzará su fuerza, ni el valiente librará su vida;
15 Y el que toma el arco no resistirá, ni escapará el ligero de pies, ni el que cabalga en caballo salvará su vida.
16 El esforzado entre esforzados huirá desnudo aquel día, dice Jehová.
Reflexión por Noemi Dominguez:
Grabada en mi memoria de mi querida abuela hay muchas escenas de su compasión por el prójimo. Muy cerca de su casa vivía en la mayor de las pobrezas una familia grande de muy pocos recursos y de muy mala reputación. Sin embargo, cada sábado mi abuela horneaba pizzas caseras y se las llevaba a estos vecinos necesitados. ¡Qué triste es que dentro del pueblo de Israel hubiese ricos que se abusaban de los menos afortunados! No solo los explotaban; también los menospreciaban. Por esta razón Dios denuncia sus pecados. Además de cometer actos inmorales, “Ellos han pisoteado la justicia al aceptar sobornos, pues vendieron a la esclavitud al justo y al pobre lo declararon culpable a cambio de un par de zapatos. Pisotean los derechos de los pobres en el polvo y son injustos con los humildes …” [Versículos 6 y 7, Versión Nueva Biblia Viva]. “Debemos aprender a considerar a las personas menos a la luz de lo que hacen u omiten hacer, y más a la luz de lo que sufren”. [Dietrich Bonhoeffer]. No solo se trata de ayudar al necesitado, sino también de proteger la dignidad del semejante tratando con respeto a quien con su trabajo por mas humilde que sea a los ojos de los demás, nos hacen la vida más agradable. Sorprendamos hoy a alguien expresando gratitud con gestos de amabilidad, respeto, y obsequio práctico, porque más allá de ayudarlo, estarás restaurando su dignidad.
Amos 2: Judgment on Israel.
1 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because he burned the bones of the king of Edom into lime:
2 But I will send a fire upon Moab, and it shall devour the palaces of Kirioth: and Moab shall die with tumult, with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet:
3 And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all the princes thereof with him, saith the Lord.
4 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Judah, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they have despised the law of the Lord, and have not kept his commandments, and their lies caused them to err, after the which their fathers have walked:
5 But I will send a fire upon Judah, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem.
6 Thus saith the Lord; For three transgressions of Israel, and for four, I will not turn away the punishment thereof; because they sold the righteous for silver, and the poor for a pair of shoes;
7 That pant after the dust of the earth on the head of the poor, and turn aside the way of the meek: and a man and his father will go in unto the same maid, to profane my holy name:
8 And they lay themselves down upon clothes laid to pledge by every altar, and they drink the wine of the condemned in the house of their god.
9 Yet destroyed I the Amorite before them, whose height was like the height of the cedars, and he was strong as the oaks; yet I destroyed his fruit from above, and his roots from beneath.
10 Also I brought you up from the land of Egypt, and led you forty years through the wilderness, to possess the land of the Amorite.
11 And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not even thus, O ye children of Israel? saith the Lord.
12 But ye gave the Nazarites wine to drink; and commanded the prophets, saying, Prophesy not.
13 Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves.
14 Therefore the flight shall perish from the swift, and the strong shall not strengthen his force, neither shall the mighty deliver himself:
15 Neither shall he stand that handleth the bow; and he that is swift of foot shall not deliver himself: neither shall he that rideth the horse deliver himself.
16 And he that is courageous among the mighty shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord.

Etched in my memory of my dear grandmother are many scenes of her compassion for others. Close to her home a rather large family lived in poverty, a family of very few resources and very bad reputation. However, every Saturday my grandmother baked homemade pizzas and took them to these her needy neighbors. How sad it is that within the people of Israel there were rich people who abused the less fortunate. They didn’t just exploit them; they also looked down on them. For this reason, God denounces their sins. In addition to committing immoral acts, they “perverted justice by accepting bribes and sold into slavery the poor who can’t repay their debts; they trade them for a pair of shoes. They trample the poor in the dust and kick aside the meek …” [Verses 6 and 7, Living Bible Version]. “We must learn to consider people less in light of what they do or fail to do, and more in light of what they suffer.” [Dietrich Bonhoeffer]. It is not just about helping the needy, but also about protecting the dignity of others by treating with respect those who, however humble their work may be in the eyes of others, make our lives more pleasant. Let’s surprise someone today by expressing gratitude with expressions of kindness, respect, and practical gifts, because beyond helping them, we will be restoring their dignity.
