Números 31: Purificación de combatientes y de prisioneros.

1 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 2 «Antes de reunirte con tus antepasados, en nombre de tu pueblo, tienes que vengarte de los madianitas».

3 Moisés se dirigió al pueblo y dijo: «Preparen a algunos de sus hombres para la guerra contra Madián. Vamos a descargar sobre ellos la venganza del Señor. 4 Que cada una de las tribus de Israel envíe mil hombres a la guerra».

5 Los escuadrones de Israel proveyeron mil hombres por cada tribu, con lo que se reunieron doce mil hombres armados para la guerra. 6 Moisés envió a la guerra a los mil hombres de cada tribu. Con ellos iba Finés, hijo del sacerdote Eleazar, quien tenía a su cargo los utensilios del santuario y las trompetas que darían la señal de ataque.

7 Tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado a Moisés, los israelitas entraron en batalla contra Madián y mataron a todos los varones. 8 Pasaron a espada a Eví, Requen, Zur, Hur y Reba, que eran los cinco reyes de Madián, y también a Balán, hijo de Beor. 9 Capturaron a las mujeres y a los niños de los madianitas, y tomaron como botín de guerra todo su ganado, rebaños y bienes. 10 A todas las ciudades y campamentos donde vivían los madianitas les prendieron fuego, 11 y se apoderaron de gente y de animales. Todos los despojos y el botín 12 se los llevaron a Moisés y al sacerdote Eleazar, y a toda la comunidad israelita. A los prisioneros, el botín y los despojos los llevaron hasta el campamento que estaba en las llanuras de Moab, cerca del Jordán, a la altura de Jericó.

13 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar y todos los líderes de la comunidad salieron a recibirlos fuera del campamento. 14 Moisés estaba furioso con los comandantes de mil y de cien soldados que regresaban de la batalla. 15 «¿Cómo es que dejaron con vida a las mujeres? —les preguntó—. 16 ¡Si fueron ellas las que, aconsejadas por Balán, hicieron que los israelitas traicionaran al Señor en Baal Peor! Por eso una plaga hirió de muerte al pueblo del Señor. 17 Maten a todos los niños, y también a todas las mujeres que hayan tenido relaciones sexuales, 18 pero quédense con todas las muchachas que jamás las hayan tenido.

Purificación de combatientes y de prisioneros
19 »Todos los que hayan matado a alguien o hayan tocado un cadáver, deberán quedarse fuera del campamento durante siete días. Al tercer día y al séptimo, se purificarán ustedes y sus prisioneros. 20 También deberán purificar toda la ropa y todo artículo de cuero, de pelo de cabra o de madera».

21 El sacerdote Eleazar dijo a los soldados que habían ido a la guerra: «Esto es lo que manda la ley que el Señor entregó a Moisés: 22 Oro, plata, bronce, hierro, estaño, plomo 23 y todo lo que resista el fuego deberá ser pasado por el fuego para purificarse, pero también deberá limpiarse con las aguas de la purificación. Todo lo que no resista el fuego deberá pasar por las aguas de la purificación. 24 Al séptimo día, lavarán ustedes sus vestidos y quedarán purificados. Entonces podrán reintegrarse al campamento».

Reparto del botín
25 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 26 «Tú y el sacerdote Eleazar y los jefes de las familias patriarcales harán un recuento de toda la gente y de todos los animales capturados. 27 Dividirán el botín entre los soldados que fueron a la guerra y el resto de la comunidad. 28 A los que fueron a la guerra les exigirás del botín una contribución para mí, el Señor. Tanto de la gente como de los asnos, vacas u ovejas, apartarás uno de cada quinientos. 29 Los tomarás de la parte que les tocó a los soldados, y se los darás al sacerdote Eleazar como contribución para mí, el Señor. 30 De la parte que les toca a los israelitas, apartarás de la gente uno de cada cincuenta, lo mismo que de los asnos, vacas, ovejas u otros animales, y se los darás a los levitas, pues ellos son los responsables del cuidado del santuario del Señor».

31 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar hicieron tal como el Señor se lo ordenó a Moisés.

32 Sin tomar en cuenta los despojos que tomaron los soldados, el botín fue de seiscientas setenta y cinco mil ovejas, 33 setenta y dos mil cabezas de ganado, 34 sesenta y un mil asnos 35 y treinta y dos mil mujeres que jamás habían tenido relaciones sexuales.

36 La mitad fue para los que fueron a la guerra:

Trescientas treinta y siete mil quinientas ovejas, 37 de las cuales se entregaron seiscientas setenta y cinco como contribución al Señor.

38 Treinta y seis mil vacas, de las cuales se entregaron setenta y dos como contribución al Señor.

39 Treinta mil quinientos asnos, de los cuales se entregaron sesenta y uno como contribución al Señor.

40 Dieciséis mil mujeres, de las cuales se entregaron treinta y dos como contribución al Señor.

41 La parte que correspondía al Señor se la entregó Moisés al sacerdote Eleazar, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado.

42 Del botín que trajeron los soldados, Moisés tomó la mitad que correspondía a los israelitas, 43 de modo que la mitad que le tocó a la comunidad fue trescientas treinta y siete mil quinientas ovejas, 44 treinta y seis mil vacas, 45 treinta mil quinientos asnos 46 y dieciséis mil mujeres. 47 De la parte que tocó a los israelitas, Moisés tomó una de cada cincuenta personas y uno de cada cincuenta animales, tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado, y todo se lo entregó a los levitas, que eran los responsables del cuidado del santuario del Señor.

La ofrenda de los capitanes
48 Entonces los oficiales que estaban a cargo de la tropa, es decir, los comandantes de mil y de cien soldados, se acercaron a Moisés 49 y dijeron: «Tus siervos han pasado revista y no falta ninguno de los soldados que estaban bajo nuestras órdenes. 50 Por eso hemos traído, como ofrenda al Señor, los artículos de oro que cada uno de nosotros encontró: pulseras, cadenas, anillos, pendientes y collares. Todo esto lo traemos para pedir perdón por nuestro pecado ante el Señor».

51 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron todos los artículos de oro. 52 Todo el oro que los comandantes de mil y de cien soldados presentaron como contribución al Señor pesó dieciséis mil setecientos cincuenta siclos.[a] 53 Cada soldado había tomado botín para sí mismo. 54 Moisés y el sacerdote Eleazar recibieron el oro de manos de los comandantes, luego lo llevaron a la Tienda de reunión para que el Señor tuviera presente a los israelitas.

“Moisés les dijo: —¿Por qué dejaron vivas a todas las mujeres? Ellas fueron precisamente las que siguieron el consejo de Balán que hizo que los israelitas pecaran contra el SEÑOR en Peor, y por eso cayó una terrible plaga sobre la comunidad del SEÑOR.” [versículo 15 y 16, Palabra de Dios para Todos]. La última misión de un líder, el fin de un mal profeta, el nuevo liderazgo eclesiástico y el reparto del botín, todo esto y mucho más en este capítulo. Moisés envía a la guerra a doce mil soldados, pero es el joven Finees, nieto de Aaron, el osado héroe del capítulo 25, quien no solo lleva los utensilios del santuario sino también las trompetas. Con ellas daría la señal del ataque. El conflictivo profeta Balaam es ejecutado por las fuerzas de Israel. Vuelven de la batalla con los despojos. Todo parecía haber sido un éxito. Sin embargo, los valientes guerreros hicieron las cosas a medias. Dejaron con vida precisamente a las mujeres que habían llevado al pueblo a la infidelidad que leímos en el capítulo 25 de este mismo libro. Tampoco nosotros debemos ser cristianos a medias si queremos obtener la victoria. Finalmente, este pasaje nos recuerda del tribunal de Cristo, cuando nuestras obras sean juzgadas: “Oro, plata, bronce, hierro, estaño, plomo y todo lo que resista el fuego deberá ser pasado por el fuego para purificarse …” [versículos 22 y 23, Nueva Versión Internacional]. Numbers 31: Dividing the Spoils.

1 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “Take vengeance on the Midianites for the Israelites. After that, you will be gathered to your people.”

3 So Moses said to the people, “Arm some of your men to go to war against the Midianites so that they may carry out the Lord’s vengeance on them. 4 Send into battle a thousand men from each of the tribes of Israel.” 5 So twelve thousand men armed for battle, a thousand from each tribe, were supplied from the clans of Israel. 6 Moses sent them into battle, a thousand from each tribe, along with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the priest, who took with him articles from the sanctuary and the trumpets for signaling.

7 They fought against Midian, as the Lord commanded Moses, and killed every man. 8 Among their victims were Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba—the five kings of Midian. They also killed Balaam son of Beor with the sword. 9 The Israelites captured the Midianite women and children and took all the Midianite herds, flocks and goods as plunder. 10 They burned all the towns where the Midianites had settled, as well as all their camps. 11 They took all the plunder and spoils, including the people and animals, 12 and brought the captives, spoils and plunder to Moses and Eleazar the priest and the Israelite assembly at their camp on the plains of Moab, by the Jordan across from Jericho.

13 Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the leaders of the community went to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the officers of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—who returned from the battle.

15 “Have you allowed all the women to live?” he asked them. 16 “They were the ones who followed Balaam’s advice and enticed the Israelites to be unfaithful to the Lord in the Peor incident, so that a plague struck the Lord’s people. 17 Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man, 18 but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man.

19 “Anyone who has killed someone or touched someone who was killed must stay outside the camp seven days. On the third and seventh days you must purify yourselves and your captives. 20 Purify every garment as well as everything made of leather, goat hair or wood.”

21 Then Eleazar the priest said to the soldiers who had gone into battle, “This is what is required by the law that the Lord gave Moses: 22 Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, lead 23 and anything else that can withstand fire must be put through the fire, and then it will be clean. But it must also be purified with the water of cleansing. And whatever cannot withstand fire must be put through that water. 24 On the seventh day wash your clothes and you will be clean. Then you may come into the camp.”

Dividing the Spoils
25 The Lord said to Moses, 26 “You and Eleazar the priest and the family heads of the community are to count all the people and animals that were captured. 27 Divide the spoils equally between the soldiers who took part in the battle and the rest of the community. 28 From the soldiers who fought in the battle, set apart as tribute for the Lord one out of every five hundred, whether people, cattle, donkeys or sheep. 29 Take this tribute from their half share and give it to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part. 30 From the Israelites’ half, select one out of every fifty, whether people, cattle, donkeys, sheep or other animals. Give them to the Levites, who are responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.” 31 So Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the Lord commanded Moses.

32 The plunder remaining from the spoils that the soldiers took was 675,000 sheep, 33 72,000 cattle, 34 61,000 donkeys 35 and 32,000 women who had never slept with a man.

36 The half share of those who fought in the battle was:

337,500 sheep, 37 of which the tribute for the Lord was 675;

38 36,000 cattle, of which the tribute for the Lord was 72;

39 30,500 donkeys, of which the tribute for the Lord was 61;

40 16,000 people, of whom the tribute for the Lord was 32.

41 Moses gave the tribute to Eleazar the priest as the Lord’s part, as the Lord commanded Moses.

42 The half belonging to the Israelites, which Moses set apart from that of the fighting men— 43 the community’s half—was 337,500 sheep, 44 36,000 cattle, 45 30,500 donkeys 46 and 16,000 people. 47 From the Israelites’ half, Moses selected one out of every fifty people and animals, as the Lord commanded him, and gave them to the Levites, who were responsible for the care of the Lord’s tabernacle.

48 Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds—went to Moses 49 and said to him, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one is missing. 50 So we have brought as an offering to the Lord the gold articles each of us acquired—armlets, bracelets, signet rings, earrings and necklaces—to make atonement for ourselves before the Lord.”

51 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted from them the gold—all the crafted articles. 52 All the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds that Moses and Eleazar presented as a gift to the Lord weighed 16,750 shekels.[a] 53 Each soldier had taken plunder for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest accepted the gold from the commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds and brought it into the tent of meeting as a memorial for the Israelites before the Lord.

” What’s this! You’ve let these women live! They’re the ones who, under Balaam’s direction, seduced the People of Israel away from God in that mess at Peor, causing the plague that hit God’s people.” [verses 15 and 16, The Message]. The last mission of a leader, the end of a corrupt prophet, the new ecclesiastical leadership and the division of the spoils, all of this and much more in this chapter. Moses sends twelve thousand soldiers to war, but it is the young Phinehas, grandson of Aaron, the daring hero of chapter 25 who carries not only the utensils of the sanctuary but also the trumpets. With them he would give the signal for the attack. The conflicted prophet Balaam is executed by the forces of Israel. They return from the battle with the spoils. Everything seemed to have been a success. However, the brave warriors did things halfway. They left alive precisely the women who had led the people to the infidelity that we read about in chapter 25 of this same book. Neither must we be half-hearted Christians if we want to live a victorious spiritual life. Finally, this passage reminds us of the judgment seat of Christ, when our works are judged: ” Gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin, and lead—and anything else that can survive fire—must be passed through the fire …” [verses 22 and 23, The Message]. The Christian’s reward will be even more valuable than the spoils of those who went to war. Be courageous and see that no one takes your crown [Revelation 3:11].
