Génesis 49: Jacob bendice a sus hijos
1 Jacob llamó a sus hijos y dijo: «Reúnanse, que voy a declararles lo que les va a suceder en el futuro:
2 »Hijos de Jacob: acérquense y escuchen;
presten atención a su padre Israel.
3 »Tú, Rubén, eres mi primogénito,
primer fruto de mi vigor,
primero en honor y en poder.
4 Impetuoso como un torrente,
ya no serás el primero:
te acostaste en mi cama;
profanaste la cama de tu propio padre.
5 »Simeón y Leví son hermanos;
sus espadas son instrumentos de violencia.
6 ¡No quiero participar de sus reuniones
ni arriesgar mi honor en sus asambleas!,
porque en su furor mataron hombres,
y por capricho mutilaron toros.
7 ¡Malditas sean la violencia de su enojo
y la crueldad de su furor!
Los dispersaré en el país de Jacob,
los desparramaré en la tierra de Israel.
8 »Tú, Judá, serás alabado[a] por tus hermanos;
dominarás a tus enemigos
y tus propios hermanos se postrarán ante ti.
9 Mi hijo Judá es como un cachorro de león
que se ha nutrido de la presa.
Se agacha como un león,
se tiende como una leona:
¿quién se atreverá a despertarlo?
10 El cetro no se apartará de Judá,
ni de entre sus pies el bastón de mando,
hasta que llegue el verdadero rey,[b]
quien merece la obediencia de los pueblos.
11 Judá amarra su asno a la vid
y la cría de su asno a la mejor cepa;
lava su ropa en vino;
su manto, en la sangre de las uvas.
12 Sus ojos son más oscuros que el vino;
sus dientes, más blancos que la leche.[c]
13 »Zabulón vivirá a la orilla del mar;
será puerto seguro para las naves
y sus fronteras llegarán hasta Sidón.
14 »Isacar es un asno fuerte
echado entre dos alforjas.
15 Al ver que el establo era bueno
y que la tierra era agradable,
agachó el hombro para llevar la carga
y se sometió a la esclavitud.
16 »Dan hará justicia en su pueblo,
como una de las tribus de Israel.
17 Dan es una serpiente junto al camino,
una víbora junto al sendero,
que muerde los talones del caballo
y hace caer de espaldas al jinete.
18 »¡Señor, espero tu salvación!
19 »Las hordas atacan a Gad,
pero él las atacará por la espalda.
20 »Aser disfrutará de comidas deliciosas;
ofrecerá manjares de reyes.
21 »Neftalí es una gacela libre,
que tiene hermosos cervatillos.[d]
22 »José es un retoño fértil,
fértil retoño junto al agua,
cuyas ramas trepan por el muro.
23 Los arqueros lo atacaron sin piedad;
le tiraron flechas, lo hostigaron.
24 Pero su arco se mantuvo firme
y sus brazos fueron ágiles.
¡Gracias al Poderoso de Jacob,
al Pastor y Roca de Israel!
25 ¡Gracias al Dios de tu padre, que te ayuda!
¡Gracias al Todopoderoso, que te bendice!
¡Con bendiciones de lo alto!
¡Con bendiciones del abismo!
¡Con bendiciones de los pechos y del seno materno!
26 Son mejores las bendiciones de tu padre
que las de los montes de antaño,
que la abundancia de las colinas eternas.
¡Que descansen estas bendiciones
sobre la cabeza de José,
sobre la frente del escogido entre sus hermanos!
27 »Benjamín es un lobo rapaz
que en la mañana devora la presa
y en la tarde reparte los despojos».
28 Estas son las doce tribus de Israel y esto es lo que su padre dijo cuando impartió a cada una de ellas su bendición.
Muerte de Jacob
29 Además, Jacob dio estas instrucciones: «Ya estoy a punto de reunirme con los míos. Entiérrenme junto a mis antepasados, en la cueva que está en el campo de Efrón el hitita. 30 Se trata de la cueva de Macpela, frente a Mamré, en la tierra de Canaán. Está en el campo que Abraham compró a Efrón el hitita, para que fuera el sepulcro de la familia. 31 Allí fueron sepultados Abraham y su esposa Sara, Isaac y su esposa Rebeca. Allí también enterré a Lea. 32 Ese campo y su cueva se les compró a los hititas».
33 Cuando Jacob terminó de dar estas instrucciones a sus hijos, volvió a acostarse; exhaló el último suspiro y fue a reunirse con sus antepasados.

“Las experiencias son ahorros que un avaro deja de lado. La sabiduría es una herencia que un derrochador no puede agotar.” [Karl Kraus]. Es común en nuestros días que al morir el padre, los hijos, que quizás no le visitaron en el hospital o que tampoco fueron al funeral, se reúnan a la lectura del testamento, porque quieren saber cuánto les toca. Algunas familias se dividen por esta causa. El capítulo de hoy nos muestra algo muy diferente. Jacob, cercano a morir, reúne a todos sus hijos y a cada uno le dice algo acerca muy significativo acerca de su pasado y de su futuro. A José y a sus hijos, tanto como a los demás hermanos de José, a cada uno de ellos los bendijo, no con bienes materiales sino con su bendición los bendijo. Esa fue la herencia que cada uno recibió. Como decíamos ayer, no te preocupes tanto por el dinero que pudieras dejarles a tus hijos; el ejemplo de una vida íntegra será una herencia que aunque la gasten, nunca la podrán agotar. Nosotros también tenemos una herencia asegurada. Una herencia que nada ni nadie nos la puede quitar. Hemos sido hechos hijos, y por ser hijos somos herederos. Nuestros nombres no están escritos en un testamento terrenal, sino por la fe en el sacrificio de Cristo en la cruz, nuestros nombres están escritos en el Libro de la Vida. “Cosas que ojo no vio, ni oído oyó, Ni han entrado al corazón del hombre, Son las cosas que Dios ha preparado para los que le aman» [1 Corintios 2:9, Biblia de las Américas].
Genesis 49:Jacob bendice a sus hijos
1 Then Jacob called for his sons and said: “Gather around so I can tell you what will happen to you in days to come.
2 “Assemble and listen, sons of Jacob;
listen to your father Israel.
3 “Reuben, you are my firstborn,
my might, the first sign of my strength,
excelling in honor, excelling in power.
4 Turbulent as the waters, you will no longer excel,
for you went up onto your father’s bed,
onto my couch and defiled it.
5 “Simeon and Levi are brothers—
their swords[a] are weapons of violence.
6 Let me not enter their council,
let me not join their assembly,
for they have killed men in their anger
and hamstrung oxen as they pleased.
7 Cursed be their anger, so fierce,
and their fury, so cruel!
I will scatter them in Jacob
and disperse them in Israel.
8 “Judah,[b] your brothers will praise you;
your hand will be on the neck of your enemies;
your father’s sons will bow down to you.
9 You are a lion’s cub, Judah;
you return from the prey, my son.
Like a lion he crouches and lies down,
like a lioness—who dares to rouse him?
10 The scepter will not depart from Judah,
nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet,[c]
until he to whom it belongs[d] shall come
and the obedience of the nations shall be his.
11 He will tether his donkey to a vine,
his colt to the choicest branch;
he will wash his garments in wine,
his robes in the blood of grapes.
12 His eyes will be darker than wine,
his teeth whiter than milk.[e]
13 “Zebulun will live by the seashore
and become a haven for ships;
his border will extend toward Sidon.
14 “Issachar is a rawboned[f] donkey
lying down among the sheep pens.[g]
15 When he sees how good is his resting place
and how pleasant is his land,
he will bend his shoulder to the burden
and submit to forced labor.
16 “Dan[h] will provide justice for his people
as one of the tribes of Israel.
17 Dan will be a snake by the roadside,
a viper along the path,
that bites the horse’s heels
so that its rider tumbles backward.
18 “I look for your deliverance, Lord.
19 “Gad[i] will be attacked by a band of raiders,
but he will attack them at their heels.
20 “Asher’s food will be rich;
he will provide delicacies fit for a king.
21 “Naphtali is a doe set free
that bears beautiful fawns.[j]
22 “Joseph is a fruitful vine,
a fruitful vine near a spring,
whose branches climb over a wall.[k]
23 With bitterness archers attacked him;
they shot at him with hostility.
24 But his bow remained steady,
his strong arms stayed[l] limber,
because of the hand of the Mighty One of Jacob,
because of the Shepherd, the Rock of Israel,
25 because of your father’s God, who helps you,
because of the Almighty,[m] who blesses you
with blessings of the skies above,
blessings of the deep springs below,
blessings of the breast and womb.
26 Your father’s blessings are greater
than the blessings of the ancient mountains,
than[n] the bounty of the age-old hills.
Let all these rest on the head of Joseph,
on the brow of the prince among[o] his brothers.
27 “Benjamin is a ravenous wolf;
in the morning he devours the prey,
in the evening he divides the plunder.”
28 All these are the twelve tribes of Israel, and this is what their father said to them when he blessed them, giving each the blessing appropriate to him.
The Death of Jacob
29 Then he gave them these instructions: “I am about to be gathered to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite, 30 the cave in the field of Machpelah, near Mamre in Canaan, which Abraham bought along with the field as a burial place from Ephron the Hittite. 31 There Abraham and his wife Sarah were buried, there Isaac and his wife Rebekah were buried, and there I buried Leah. 32 The field and the cave in it were bought from the Hittites.[p]”
33 When Jacob had finished giving instructions to his sons, he drew his feet up into the bed, breathed his last and was gathered to his people.

“Experiences are savings that a miser sets aside. Wisdom is an inheritance that a spendthrift cannot exhaust.” [Karl Kraus]. It is common nowadays that when the father dies, the children, who perhaps did not visit him in the hospital or who did not go to the funeral, gather for the reading of the will; to find out how much they have coming to them. Some families are divided because of this. Today’s chapter shows us something very different. Jacob, near death, gathers all his sons and tells each one something very significant about his past and of his future. Joseph and his sons, as well as Joseph’s other brothers, Jacob blessed each one of them, not with material goods but with his blessing. That was the inheritance that each one received. As we said yesterday, don’t worry so much about the money you could leave your children; the example of an upright life will be an inheritance that, even if they spend it, they can never exhaust it. We, too, have a safe and secure inheritance. An inheritance that nothing and no one can take away from us. We have been made children of God, and because we are His children, we are heirs. Our names are not written in an earthly will, but by faith in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, our names are written in the Book of Life. “What no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived— God has prepared these things for those who love him” [1 Corinthians 2:9, Christian Standard Bible].
