Génesis 23: Muerte y sepultura de Sara.
1 Y FUÉ la vida de Sara ciento veintisiete años: tantos fueron los años de la vida de Sara.
2 Y murió Sara en Kiriath-arba, que es Hebrón, en la tierra de Canaán: y vino Abraham á hacer el duelo á Sara y á llorarla.
3 Y levantóse Abraham de delante de su muerto, y habló á los hijos de Heth, diciendo:
4 Peregrino y advenedizo soy entre vosotros; dadme heredad de sepultura con vosotros, y sepultaré mi muerto de delante de mí.
5 Y respondieron los hijos de Heth á Abraham, y dijéronle:
6 Oyenos, señor mío, eres un príncipe de Dios entre nosotros; en lo mejor de nuestras sepulturas sepulta á tu muerto; ninguno de nosotros te impedirá su sepultura, para que entierres tu muerto.
7 Y Abraham se levantó, é inclinóse al pueblo de aquella tierra, á los hijos de Heth;
8 Y habló con ellos, diciendo: Si tenéis voluntad que yo sepulte mi muerto de delante de mí, oidme, é interceded por mí con Ephrón, hijo de Zohar,
9 Para que me dé la cueva de Macpela, que tiene al cabo de su heredad: que por su justo precio me la dé, para posesión de sepultura en medio de vosotros.
10 Este Ephrón hallábase entre los hijos de Heth: y respondió Ephrón Hetheo á Abraham, en oídos de los hijos de Heth, de todos los que entraban por la puerta de su ciudad, diciendo:
11 No, señor mío, óyeme: te doy la heredad, y te doy también la cueva que está en ella; delante de los hijos de mi pueblo te la doy; sepulta tu muerto.
12 Y Abraham se inclinó delante del pueblo de la tierra.
13 Y respondió á Ephrón en oídos del pueblo de la tierra, diciendo: Antes, si te place, ruégote que me oigas; yo daré el precio de la heredad, tómalo de mí, y sepultaré en ella mi muerto.
14 Y respondió Ephrón á Abraham, diciéndole:
15 Señor mío, escúchame: la tierra vale cuatrocientos siclos de plata: ¿qué es esto entre mí y ti? entierra pues tu muerto.
16 Entonces Abraham se convino con Ephrón, y pesó Abraham á Ephrón el dinero que dijo, oyéndolo los hijos de Heth, cuatrocientos siclos de plata, de buena ley entre mercaderes.
17 Y quedó la heredad de Ephrón que estaba en Macpela enfrente de Mamre, la heredad y la cueva que estaba en ella, y todos los árboles que había en la heredad, y en todo su término al derredor,
18 Por de Abraham en posesión, á vista de los hijos de Heth, y de todos los que entraban por la puerta de la ciudad.
19 Y después de esto sepultó Abraham á Sara su mujer en la cueva de la heredad de Macpela enfrente de Mamre, que es Hebrón en la tierra de Canaán.
20 Y quedó la heredad y la cueva que en ella había, por de Abraham, en posesión de sepultura adquirida de los hijos de Heth.

Hay un tema que a nadie le gusta tocar o acerca de lo cual ni siquiera pensar: los preparativos para nuestra muerte, los arreglos funerales, la compra de un terreno donde sepultarnos, el testamento … Aunque queramos pasar todo esto por alto, eventualmente tendremos que enfrentarlo. Al morir Sara, Abraham hizo duelo, la lloró y comenzó a hacer los arreglos para su decente sepultura. Era extranjero, forastero en su propia tierra y sin embargo cumple con las reglas del país, y da así buen testimonio. “Eres un príncipe de Dios entre nosotros” [versículo 6, Reina Varela 1960], fue el testimonio de los que le rodeaban y le ofrecieron que eligiera el mejor lugar para la sepultura. Abraham supo respetar sus costumbres. Se inclinó ante ellos.! ¡Qué ejemplo para todos nosotros que vivimos en el extranjero! No quemó la bandera, ni hizo protestas. Abraham insistió en pagar el justo precio: cuatrocientos siclos de plata y así fue como Sara fue sepultada en la cueva de Macpela. Avance rápido. Judas vendió por 30 piezas de plata por Alguien que valía mucho más que cuatrocientos siclos de plata. Su valor es incalculable porque no fuimos redimidos con oro o plata sino con sangre de Cristo, como un cordero sin mancha ni contaminación. [1 Pedro 1:18-19]. Cristo pagó el precio completo y con ello no nos asegura un lugar en un cementerio de este mundo; nos asegura un lugar en el cielo, en la casa del Padre para toda la eternidad. ¡Está bien que hagamos preparativos para nuestros funerales, pero cuanto más importante es prepararnos para saber dónde pasaremos toda la eternidad!
Genesis 23:Sarah’s Death and Burial
1 And Sarah was an hundred and seven and twenty years old: these were the years of the life of Sarah.
2 And Sarah died in Kirjatharba; the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan: and Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
3 And Abraham stood up from before his dead, and spake unto the sons of Heth, saying,
4 I am a stranger and a sojourner with you: give me a possession of a buryingplace with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.
5 And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,
6 Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.
7 And Abraham stood up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, even to the children of Heth.
8 And he communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
9 That he may give me the cave of Machpelah, which he hath, which is in the end of his field; for as much money as it is worth he shall give it me for a possession of a buryingplace amongst you.
10 And Ephron dwelt among the children of Heth: and Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the audience of the children of Heth, even of all that went in at the gate of his city, saying,
11 Nay, my lord, hear me: the field give I thee, and the cave that is therein, I give it thee; in the presence of the sons of my people give I it thee: bury thy dead.
12 And Abraham bowed down himself before the people of the land.
13 And he spake unto Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, But if thou wilt give it, I pray thee, hear me: I will give thee money for the field; take it of me, and I will bury my dead there.
14 And Ephron answered Abraham, saying unto him,
15 My lord, hearken unto me: the land is worth four hundred shekels of silver; what is that betwixt me and thee? bury therefore thy dead.
16 And Abraham hearkened unto Ephron; and Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver, which he had named in the audience of the sons of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, current money with the merchant.
17 And the field of Ephron which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, and the cave which was therein, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all the borders round about, were made sure
18 Unto Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all that went in at the gate of his city.
19 And after this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre: the same is Hebron in the land of Canaan.
20 And the field, and the cave that is therein, were made sure unto Abraham for a possession of a buryingplace by the sons of Heth.

There is a subject that no one likes to approach or even think about: the preparations for our death, the funeral arrangements, the purchase of a plot of land to bury us, the will … Even if we manage not to speak about it, we will eventually have to face it. When Sarah died, Abraham mourned, mourned for her, and began to make the funeral arrangements. He was a foreigner, a stranger in his own land, and yet he obeys the rules of the land, and thus bears good witness. “You are a prince of God among us” [verse 6, New International Version], was the testimony of those around him and they offered him to choose the best place to bury her. Abraham was respectful of their customs. He bowed to them! What an example for all of us who live abroad! He did not burn the flag, nor did he protest. Abraham insisted on paying the just price: four hundred shekels of silver, and so Sarah was buried in the cave of Machpelah. Fast forward. Judas sold for 30 pieces of silver for Someone who was worth much more than four hundred shekels of silver. Its value is incalculable because we were not redeemed with gold or silver but with the blood of Christ, like a lamb without blemish or spot. [1 Peter 1:18-19]. Christ paid the full price and thereby does not secure us a place in a cemetery of this world; He assures us of a place in heaven, in the Father’s house for all eternity. It’s okay for us to make our funeral preparations, but how much more important is it to prepare to know where we will spend all eternity!
