Josué 8: Toma y destrucción de Hai.
Obediencia y victoria
1 El Señor exhortó a Josué: «¡No tengas miedo ni te desanimes! Toma contigo a todo el ejército y ataquen la ciudad de Hai. Yo les daré la victoria sobre su rey y su ejército; se apropiarán de su ciudad y de todo el territorio que la rodea. 2 Tratarás a esta ciudad y a su rey como hiciste con Jericó y con su rey. Sin embargo, podrán quedarse con el botín de guerra y todo el ganado. Prepara una emboscada en la parte posterior de la ciudad».
3 Se levantó Josué junto con su ejército y fueron a pelear contra Hai. Josué escogió treinta mil guerreros y los envió durante la noche 4 con estas órdenes: «Ustedes pondrán una emboscada detrás de la ciudad. No se alejen mucho de ella y manténganse en alerta. 5 Yo me acercaré con mi tropa a la ciudad y cuando los enemigos salgan a pelear contra nosotros, huiremos como la primera vez. 6 Pensando que estamos huyendo de nuevo, ellos nos perseguirán y así los alejaremos de la ciudad. 7 Entonces ustedes saldrán de su escondite y se apoderarán de Hai. El Señor les dará la victoria. 8 Cuando hayan capturado la ciudad, quémenla tal como nos lo ordenó el Señor. Estas son mis órdenes».
9 Dicho esto, Josué envió a los guerreros a preparar la emboscada. Ellos se apostaron entre Betel y Hai, al oeste de la ciudad, mientras él pasaba esa noche con su ejército.
10 Muy de mañana se levantó Josué, pasó revista al ejército y, junto con los jefes de Israel, se puso en marcha hacia Hai. 11 Todos los guerreros que iban con Josué llegaron cerca de Hai y acamparon al norte de la ciudad. Solo había un valle entre ellos y la ciudad. 12 Josué envió a cinco mil guerreros a preparar la emboscada, y ellos se escondieron entre Betel y Hai, al oeste de la ciudad. 13 De esa manera, una tropa acampó al norte de la ciudad y la otra al oeste. Esa noche Josué avanzó hacia el medio del valle.
14 Cuando el rey de Hai se dio cuenta de lo que pasaba, se apresuró a salir con toda su tropa a pelear contra Israel, en la pendiente que está frente al desierto, sin saber que habían puesto una emboscada detrás de la ciudad. 15 Josué y su tropa, fingiéndose derrotados, huyeron por el camino que lleva al desierto. 16 Mientras tanto, todos los hombres que estaban en la ciudad recibieron el llamado de perseguir a los israelitas, alejándose así de Hai. 17 No quedó ni un solo hombre en Hai o en Betel que no hubiera salido a perseguir a Israel, de modo que la ciudad de Hai quedó desprotegida.
18 Entonces el Señor ordenó a Josué: «Apunta hacia Hai con la jabalina que llevas, pues en tus manos entregaré la ciudad». Y así lo hizo Josué. 19 Al ver esto, los que estaban en la emboscada salieron de inmediato de donde estaban, entraron en la ciudad, la tomaron y la incendiaron.
20 Cuando los hombres de Hai miraron hacia atrás, vieron que subía de la ciudad una nube de humo. Entonces se dieron cuenta de que no podían huir en ninguna dirección, porque la gente de Josué que antes huía hacia el desierto ahora se lanzaba contra sus perseguidores. 21 En efecto, tan pronto como Josué y todos los israelitas vieron que los que tendieron la emboscada habían tomado la ciudad y la habían incendiado, se volvieron y atacaron a los de Hai. 22 Los de la emboscada salieron de la ciudad y persiguieron a los guerreros de Hai, y así estos quedaron atrapados por todos lados. Los israelitas atacaron a sus enemigos hasta no dejar ni fugitivos ni sobrevivientes. 23 Al rey de Hai lo capturaron vivo y se lo entregaron a Josué.
24 Después de que los israelitas terminaron de matar a filo de espada, en el campo y el desierto, a todos los guerreros de Hai que habían salido a perseguirlos, regresaron a la ciudad y del mismo modo mataron a todos los que quedaban. 25 Ese día murieron todos los habitantes de Hai, como doce mil hombres y mujeres. 26 Josué mantuvo extendido el brazo con el que sostenía su jabalina, hasta que el ejército israelita exterminó a todos los habitantes de Hai. 27 Y tal como el Señor había mandado, el pueblo se quedó con el botín de guerra y todo el ganado.
28 Luego Josué incendió la ciudad, reduciéndola a escombros, como permanece hasta el día de hoy. 29 También mandó ahorcar en un árbol al rey de Hai y ordenó que dejaran su cuerpo colgando hasta la tarde. Al ponerse el sol, Josué mandó que bajaran el cuerpo del rey y lo arrojaran a la entrada de la ciudad. Así mismo, pidió que se amontonaran piedras encima del cadáver. Ese montón de piedras permanece hasta el día de hoy.
Lectura de la Ley en el monte Ebal
30 Entonces Josué levantó, en el monte Ebal, un altar al Señor, Dios de Israel, 31 tal como Moisés, siervo del Señor, había ordenado a los israelitas. Lo levantó de acuerdo con lo que está escrito en el libro de la Ley de Moisés: un altar de piedras sin labrar, es decir, que no habían sido trabajadas con ninguna herramienta. En él ofrecieron holocaustos y sacrificios de comunión al Señor. 32 Allí, en presencia de los israelitas, Josué escribió en tablas de piedra una copia de la ley que Moisés había escrito. 33 Todos los israelitas con sus jefes, oficiales y jueces estaban de pie a ambos lados del arca del pacto, frente a los sacerdotes levitas que la cargaban en hombros. Tanto los israelitas como los extranjeros residentes tomaron sus posiciones, la mitad de ellos hacia el monte Guerizín y la otra mitad hacia el monte Ebal, tal como Moisés, siervo del Señor, había mandado cuando bendijo por primera vez al pueblo de Israel.
34 Luego Josué leyó todas las palabras de la ley, tanto las bendiciones como las maldiciones, según lo que estaba escrito en el libro de la Ley. 35 De esta lectura que hizo Josué no se omitió ninguna palabra de lo ordenado por Moisés. Hizo la lectura ante toda la asamblea de los israelitas, incluyendo a las mujeres, los niños y los extranjeros que vivían entre ellos.

Probablemente en la punta de la lanza habría una bandera o una insignia que podía usarse como señal para animar a los valientes guerreros. Como el emblemático capitán del barco, Josué permanece al frente hasta que la batalla hubo terminado. Joshua 8: Ai Destroyed.
Ai Destroyed
1 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Take the whole army with you, and go up and attack Ai. For I have delivered into your hands the king of Ai, his people, his city and his land. 2 You shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho and its king, except that you may carry off their plunder and livestock for yourselves. Set an ambush behind the city.”
3 So Joshua and the whole army moved out to attack Ai. He chose thirty thousand of his best fighting men and sent them out at night 4 with these orders: “Listen carefully. You are to set an ambush behind the city. Don’t go very far from it. All of you be on the alert. 5 I and all those with me will advance on the city, and when the men come out against us, as they did before, we will flee from them. 6 They will pursue us until we have lured them away from the city, for they will say, ‘They are running away from us as they did before.’ So when we flee from them, 7 you are to rise up from ambush and take the city. The Lord your God will give it into your hand. 8 When you have taken the city, set it on fire. Do what the Lord has commanded. See to it; you have my orders.”
9 Then Joshua sent them off, and they went to the place of ambush and lay in wait between Bethel and Ai, to the west of Ai—but Joshua spent that night with the people.
10 Early the next morning Joshua mustered his army, and he and the leaders of Israel marched before them to Ai. 11 The entire force that was with him marched up and approached the city and arrived in front of it. They set up camp north of Ai, with the valley between them and the city. 12 Joshua had taken about five thousand men and set them in ambush between Bethel and Ai, to the west of the city. 13 So the soldiers took up their positions—with the main camp to the north of the city and the ambush to the west of it. That night Joshua went into the valley.
14 When the king of Ai saw this, he and all the men of the city hurried out early in the morning to meet Israel in battle at a certain place overlooking the Arabah. But he did not know that an ambush had been set against him behind the city. 15 Joshua and all Israel let themselves be driven back before them, and they fled toward the wilderness. 16 All the men of Ai were called to pursue them, and they pursued Joshua and were lured away from the city. 17 Not a man remained in Ai or Bethel who did not go after Israel. They left the city open and went in pursuit of Israel.
18 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “Hold out toward Ai the javelin that is in your hand, for into your hand I will deliver the city.” So Joshua held out toward the city the javelin that was in his hand. 19 As soon as he did this, the men in the ambush rose quickly from their position and rushed forward. They entered the city and captured it and quickly set it on fire.
20 The men of Ai looked back and saw the smoke of the city rising up into the sky, but they had no chance to escape in any direction; the Israelites who had been fleeing toward the wilderness had turned back against their pursuers. 21 For when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that smoke was going up from it, they turned around and attacked the men of Ai. 22 Those in the ambush also came out of the city against them, so that they were caught in the middle, with Israelites on both sides. Israel cut them down, leaving them neither survivors nor fugitives. 23 But they took the king of Ai alive and brought him to Joshua.
24 When Israel had finished killing all the men of Ai in the fields and in the wilderness where they had chased them, and when every one of them had been put to the sword, all the Israelites returned to Ai and killed those who were in it. 25 Twelve thousand men and women fell that day—all the people of Ai. 26 For Joshua did not draw back the hand that held out his javelin until he had destroyed[a] all who lived in Ai. 27 But Israel did carry off for themselves the livestock and plunder of this city, as the Lord had instructed Joshua.
28 So Joshua burned Ai[b] and made it a permanent heap of ruins, a desolate place to this day. 29 He impaled the body of the king of Ai on a pole and left it there until evening. At sunset, Joshua ordered them to take the body from the pole and throw it down at the entrance of the city gate. And they raised a large pile of rocks over it, which remains to this day.
The Covenant Renewed at Mount Ebal
30 Then Joshua built on Mount Ebal an altar to the Lord, the God of Israel, 31 as Moses the servant of the Lord had commanded the Israelites. He built it according to what is written in the Book of the Law of Moses—an altar of uncut stones, on which no iron tool had been used. On it they offered to the Lord burnt offerings and sacrificed fellowship offerings. 32 There, in the presence of the Israelites, Joshua wrote on stones a copy of the law of Moses. 33 All the Israelites, with their elders, officials and judges, were standing on both sides of the ark of the covenant of the Lord, facing the Levitical priests who carried it. Both the foreigners living among them and the native-born were there. Half of the people stood in front of Mount Gerizim and half of them in front of Mount Ebal, as Moses the servant of the Lord had formerly commanded when he gave instructions to bless the people of Israel.
34 Afterward, Joshua read all the words of the law—the blessings and the curses—just as it is written in the Book of the Law. 35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua did not read to the whole assembly of Israel, including the women and children, and the foreigners who lived among them.

” And the Lord said unto Joshua, “Fear not, neither be thou dismayed.’ ” “Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand.” [Verses 1 and 18, KJ21]. Just as Moses had stretched out his rod over the Red Sea to divide it, or as he raised his arms in the fight against the Amalekites, Joshua lifts up his spear or javelin throughout this fight. Probably on the tip of the spear there was a flag or a badge that could be used as a sign to encourage the brave warriors. As the ship’s iconic captain, Joshua remains at the forefront until the battle was over. [verse 26]. “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger.
