Génesis 36: Descendientes de Esaú.
1 Esta es la historia de Esaú, es decir, Edom.
2 Esaú se casó con mujeres cananeas: con Ada, hija de Elón, el hitita; con Aholibama, hija de Aná y nieta de Zibeón, el heveo; 3 y con Basemat, hija de Ismael y hermana de Nebayot.
4 Esaú tuvo estos hijos: con Ada tuvo a Elifaz; con Basemat, a Reuel; 5 con Aholibama, a Jeús, Jalán y Coré. Estos fueron los hijos que tuvo Esaú mientras vivía en la tierra de Canaán.
6 Después Esaú tomó a sus esposas, hijos, hijas y a todas las personas que lo acompañaban, junto con su ganado y todos sus animales, todos los bienes que había adquirido en la tierra de Canaán y se trasladó a otra región para alejarse de su hermano Jacob. 7 Los dos habían acumulado tantos bienes que no podían estar juntos; la tierra donde vivían no bastaba para alimentar al ganado de ambos. 8 Fue así como Esaú, o sea, Edom, se asentó en la región montañosa de Seír.
9 Esta es la historia de Esaú, padre de los edomitas, que habitaron en la región montañosa de Seír.
10 Los nombres de sus hijos son estos:
Elifaz, hijo de Ada, esposa de Esaú; y Reuel, hijo de Basemat, esposa de Esaú.
11 Los hijos de Elifaz fueron:
Temán, Omar, Zefo, Gatán y Quenaz. 12 Elifaz tuvo un hijo con una concubina[a] suya, llamada Timná, al que llamó Amalec. Todos estos fueron nietos de Ada, esposa de Esaú.
13 Los hijos de Reuel fueron:
Najat, Zera, Sama y Mizá. Estos fueron los nietos de Basemat, esposa de Esaú.
14 Los hijos de la otra esposa de Esaú, Aholibama, que era hija de Aná y nieta de Zibeón:
Jeús, Jalán y Coré.
15 Estos fueron los líderes de los descendientes de Esaú:
De los hijos de Elifaz, primogénito de Esaú, los jefes fueron:
Temán, Omar, Zefo, Quenaz, 16 Coré, Gatán y Amalec. Estos fueron los jefes de los descendientes de Elifaz en la tierra de Edom; todos ellos fueron nietos de Ada.
17 De los hijos de Reuel, hijo de Esaú, los jefes fueron:
Najat, Zera, Sama y Mizá. Estos fueron los jefes de los descendientes de Reuel en la tierra de Edom; todos ellos, nietos de Basemat, esposa de Esaú.
18 De los hijos de Aholibama, hija de Aná y esposa de Esaú, los jefes fueron:
Jeús, Jalán y Coré.
19 Estos fueron descendientes de Esaú, también llamado Edom, y a su vez jefes de sus respectivas tribus.
20 Estos fueron los descendientes de Seír, el horeo, que habitaban en aquella región:
Lotán, Sobal, Zibeón, Aná, 21 Disón, Ezer y Disán. Estos descendientes de Seír fueron los jefes de los horeos en la tierra de Edom.
22 Hijos de Lotán:
Horí y Homán. Lotán tenía una hermana llamada Timná.
23 Hijos de Sobal:
Alván, Manajat, Ebal, Sefó y Onam.
24 Hijos de Zibeón:
Ayá y Aná. Este último es el mismo que encontró las aguas termales en el desierto mientras cuidaba los asnos de su padre Zibeón.
25 Hijos de Aná:
Disón y Aholibama, hija de Aná.
26 Hijos de Disán:
Hemdán, Esbán, Itrán y Querán.
27 Hijos de Ezer:
Bilán, Zaván y Acán.
28 Hijos de Disán:
Uz y Arán.
29 Los jefes de los horeos fueron:
Lotán, Sobal, Zibeón, Aná, 30 Disón, Ezer y Disán.
Cada uno de ellos fue jefe de su tribu en la región de Seír.
Los reyes de Edom
31 Los reyes que a continuación se mencionan reinaron en la tierra de Edom antes de que los israelitas tuvieran rey:
32 Bela, hijo de Beor, que reinó en Edom. El nombre de su ciudad era Dinaba.
33 Cuando murió Bela, reinó en su lugar Jobab, hijo de Zera, que provenía de Bosra.
34 Cuando murió Jobab, reinó en su lugar Jusán, que provenía de la región de Temán.
35 Cuando murió Jusán, reinó en su lugar Hadad, hijo de Bedad. Este derrotó a Madián en el campo de Moab. El nombre de su ciudad era Avit.
36 Cuando murió Hadad, reinó en su lugar Samla, que provenía de Masreca.
37 Cuando murió Samla, reinó en su lugar Saúl, que provenía de Rejobot, que está junto al río Éufrates.
38 Cuando murió Saúl, reinó en su lugar Baal Janán, hijo de Acbor.
39 Cuando murió Baal Janán, hijo de Acbor, reinó en su lugar Hadad.[b] Su ciudad se llamaba Pau y su esposa fue Mehetabel, hija de Matred y nieta de Mezab.
40 Estos son los nombres de los jefes que descendieron de Esaú, cada uno según su clan y región:
Timná, Alvá, Jetet,
41 Aholibama, Elá, Pinón,
42 Quenaz, Temán, Mibzar,
43 Magdiel e Iram.
Estos fueron los jefes de Edom, según los lugares que habitaron.
Este fue Esaú, padre de los edomitas.

Muchos de nosotros estamos interesados en saber acerca de nuestros antepasados. ¿Cuál es nuestra historia, cuáles son nuestras raíces? No existían entonces pruebas de ADN. Tampoco existía Ancestry.com para saber nuestros orígenes. Nada está demás en las Sagradas Escrituras. Cada tiene su significado. Fueron personas de carne y hueso, con padres y madres; porque las narraciones bíblicas no son cuentos de hadas, son historias con lugares y nombres. Muchos tuvieron vidas sin aparente notoriedad, otros no tuvieron una conducta ejemplar. Gente como todos nosotros en muchos aspectos. Algunos como Esaú y varios de sus descendientes establecieron sus propios “reinos”. En la lectura de la semana pasada Jacob había aprendido el camino de la humildad, inclinándose ante Esaú siete veces antes que su hermano lo recibiera con un abrazo. Genesis 36:Esau’s Descendants
1 This is the account of the family line of Esau (that is, Edom).
2 Esau took his wives from the women of Canaan: Adah daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Oholibamah daughter of Anah and granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite— 3 also Basemath daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.
4 Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, Basemath bore Reuel, 5 and Oholibamah bore Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the sons of Esau, who were born to him in Canaan.
6 Esau took his wives and sons and daughters and all the members of his household, as well as his livestock and all his other animals and all the goods he had acquired in Canaan, and moved to a land some distance from his brother Jacob. 7 Their possessions were too great for them to remain together; the land where they were staying could not support them both because of their livestock. 8 So Esau (that is, Edom) settled in the hill country of Seir.
9 This is the account of the family line of Esau the father of the Edomites in the hill country of Seir.
10 These are the names of Esau’s sons:
Eliphaz, the son of Esau’s wife Adah, and Reuel, the son of Esau’s wife Basemath.
11 The sons of Eliphaz:
Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam and Kenaz.
12 Esau’s son Eliphaz also had a concubine named Timna, who bore him Amalek. These were grandsons of Esau’s wife Adah.
13 The sons of Reuel:
Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were grandsons of Esau’s wife Basemath.

The sons of Eliphaz the firstborn of Esau:
Chiefs Teman, Omar, Zepho, Kenaz, 16 Korah,[a] Gatam and Amalek. These were the chiefs descended from Eliphaz in Edom; they were grandsons of Adah.
17 The sons of Esau’s son Reuel:
Chiefs Nahath, Zerah, Shammah and Mizzah. These were the chiefs descended from Reuel in Edom; they were grandsons of Esau’s wife Basemath.
18 The sons of Esau’s wife Oholibamah:
Chiefs Jeush, Jalam and Korah. These were the chiefs descended from Esau’s wife Oholibamah daughter of Anah.
19 These were the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these were their chiefs.
20 These were the sons of Seir the Horite, who were living in the region:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These sons of Seir in Edom were Horite chiefs.
22 The sons of Lotan:
Hori and Homam.[b] Timna was Lotan’s sister.
23 The sons of Shobal:
Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho and Onam.
24 The sons of Zibeon:
Aiah and Anah. This is the Anah who discovered the hot springs[c] in the desert while he was grazing the donkeys of his father Zibeon.
25 The children of Anah:
Dishon and Oholibamah daughter of Anah.
26 The sons of Dishon[d]:
Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran and Keran.
27 The sons of Ezer:
Bilhan, Zaavan and Akan.
28 The sons of Dishan:
Uz and Aran.
29 These were the Horite chiefs:
Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 30 Dishon, Ezer and Dishan. These were the Horite chiefs, according to their divisions, in the land of Seir.
The Rulers of Edom
31 These were the kings who reigned in Edom before any Israelite king reigned:
32 Bela son of Beor became king of Edom. His city was named Dinhabah.
33 When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah from Bozrah succeeded him as king.
34 When Jobab died, Husham from the land of the Temanites succeeded him as king.
35 When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, succeeded him as king. His city was named Avith.
36 When Hadad died, Samlah from Masrekah succeeded him as king.
37 When Samlah died, Shaul from Rehoboth on the river succeeded him as king.
38 When Shaul died, Baal-Hanan son of Akbor succeeded him as king.
39 When Baal-Hanan son of Akbor died, Hadad[e] succeeded him as king. His city was named Pau, and his wife’s name was Mehetabel daughter of Matred, the daughter of Me-Zahab.
40 These were the chiefs descended from Esau, by name, according to their clans and regions:
Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, 41 Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, 42 Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, 43 Magdiel and Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements in the land they occupied.
This is the family line of Esau, the father of the Edomites.

Many of us are interested in knowing about our ancestors. What is our history, what are our roots? There was no DNA testing at the time. Nor was there Ancestry.com to know our origins. Nothing is superfluous in the Holy Scriptures. Each has its own meaning. They were people of flesh and blood, with fathers and mothers; Because biblical narratives are not fairy tales, they are stories with places and names. Many had lives without apparent notoriety, others did not have exemplary conduct. People like all of us in many ways. Some, like Esau and several of his descendants, established their own “kingdoms.” In last week’s reading Jacob had learned the way of humility, bowing to Esau seven times before his brother greeted him with an embrace. In this chapter Esau became great, and his aggrandizement seems to be the legacy to his descendants. I hear the echo of John the Baptist’s statement, “He must be more and more important, and I less and less,”1 and I want to imitate him. The last section begins: “These are the kings who ruled in the land of Edom before the Israelites had a king.” Finally, the fact that the kings of Edom are listed before the kings of Israel also illustrates a principle, we find in 1 Corinthians 15:45-46: what comes first is what is natural, then what is spiritual. Will you not today look to the things above, not to the things of the earth? I, too, intend to do so, no matter what the world tells me.
