Josué 14: División de los territorios al occidente del Jordán.
1 Estas son las tierras cananeas que el sacerdote Eleazar, Josué, hijo de Nun, y los jefes de los clanes entregaron a los israelitas como herencia. 2 Esa herencia se repartió por sorteo a las nueve tribus y media, tal como el Señor había ordenado por medio de Moisés. 3 Ya este les había dado por herencia la parte oriental del Jordán a las dos tribus y media, pero a los levitas no les dio tierras, 4 porque los descendientes de José se habían dividido en dos tribus, Manasés y Efraín. Los levitas no recibieron tierras, solo algunas poblaciones con sus respectivos campos de cultivo y pastoreo. 5 Así los israelitas dividieron el territorio tal como el Señor se lo había ordenado a Moisés.
Caleb recibe Hebrón
6 Los descendientes de Judá se acercaron a Josué en Guilgal. El quenizita Caleb, hijo de Jefone, pidió a Josué: «Acuérdate de lo que el Señor dijo a Moisés, hombre de Dios, respecto a ti y a mí en Cades Barnea. 7 Yo tenía cuarenta años cuando Moisés, siervo del Señor, me envió desde Cades Barnea para explorar el país y con toda franqueza le informé de lo que vi. 8 Mis compañeros de viaje, por el contrario, desanimaron a la gente y le infundieron temor. Pero yo me mantuve fiel al Señor mi Dios. 9 Ese mismo día Moisés me hizo este juramento: “La tierra que toquen tus pies será herencia tuya y de tus descendientes para siempre, porque fuiste fiel al Señor mi Dios”.[a]
10 »Ya han pasado cuarenta y cinco años desde que el Señor hizo la promesa por medio de Moisés, mientras Israel peregrinaba por el desierto; aquí estoy este día con mis ochenta y cinco años: ¡el Señor me ha mantenido con vida! 11 Y todavía mantengo la misma fortaleza que tenía el día en que Moisés me envió. Para la batalla tengo las mismas energías que tenía entonces. 12 Dame, pues, la región montañosa que el Señor me prometió en esa ocasión. Desde ese día, tú bien sabes que los anaquitas habitan allí y que sus ciudades son enormes y fortificadas. Sin embargo, con la ayuda del Señor los expulsaré de ese territorio, tal como él ha prometido».
13 Entonces Josué bendijo a Caleb, hijo de Jefone, y le dio por herencia el territorio de Hebrón. 14 A partir de ese día Hebrón ha pertenecido al quenizita Caleb, hijo de Jefone, porque fue fiel al Señor, Dios de Israel. 15 Hebrón se llamaba originalmente Quiriat Arbá, porque Arbá fue un importante antepasado de los anaquitas.
Después de todo esto el país se vio libre de guerras.

“Algunos amigos dejan las huellas de sus pisadas en tu corazón”. [Eleanor Roosevelt]. Uno de los nombres más populares desde el año 2012 para niños ha sido el nombre Caleb. Sus raíces hebreas connotan fidelidad, como la de un perro a su amo. Caleb no solo fue fiel al mandato de investigar la tierra, y fue fiel a su propia opinión acerca de ella aun cuando casi todos sus compañeros fueron tan pesimistas por los gigantes que habitaban la tierra, sino que también creyó en la fidelidad de Dios. Han pasado cuarentaicinco años y es tan fuerte como cuando Moisés lo envió [versículo 11], ahora quiere hacer efectiva la promesa que Moisés entonces le había hecho. Pide para sí el monte Hebrón. La palabra Hebrón deriva de la palabra hebrea “haver” que significa amigo, un término que se asocia al patriarca Abraham porque él fue llamado amigo de Dios. “Hacer cien amigos no es un milagro. El milagro es hacer un solo amigo que estará a tu lado incluso cuando cientos estén en tu contra.” [John Spence]. Aplaudimos la entrega de quienes son los primeros en prestar auxilio en situaciones de emergencia nacional, rescatando gente, llevando alimentos o trabajando en lugares de peligro de contagios por salvar la vida de otros. “Fue el mejor de los tiempos, fue el peor de los tiempos, …” [Charles Dickens]. ¿Conoces a alguien que está pasando una crisis? Tu ayuda y socorro puede convertir el peor de los tiempos en el mejor de los tiempos porque habrá descubierto en ti un amigo genuino.

Division of the Land West of the Jordan
1 Now these are the areas the Israelites received as an inheritance in the land of Canaan, which Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun and the heads of the tribal clans of Israel allotted to them. 2 Their inheritances were assigned by lot to the nine and a half tribes, as the Lord had commanded through Moses. 3 Moses had granted the two and a half tribes their inheritance east of the Jordan but had not granted the Levites an inheritance among the rest, 4 for Joseph’s descendants had become two tribes—Manasseh and Ephraim. The Levites received no share of the land but only towns to live in, with pasturelands for their flocks and herds. 5 So the Israelites divided the land, just as the Lord had commanded Moses.
Allotment for Caleb
6 Now the people of Judah approached Joshua at Gilgal, and Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite said to him, “You know what the Lord said to Moses the man of God at Kadesh Barnea about you and me. 7 I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to explore the land. And I brought him back a report according to my convictions, 8 but my fellow Israelites who went up with me made the hearts of the people melt in fear. I, however, followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly. 9 So on that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land on which your feet have walked will be your inheritance and that of your children forever, because you have followed the Lord my God wholeheartedly.’[a]
10 “Now then, just as the Lord promised, he has kept me alive for forty-five years since the time he said this to Moses, while Israel moved about in the wilderness. So here I am today, eighty-five years old! 11 I am still as strong today as the day Moses sent me out; I’m just as vigorous to go out to battle now as I was then. 12 Now give me this hill country that the Lord promised me that day. You yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large and fortified, but, the Lord helping me, I will drive them out just as he said.”
13 Then Joshua blessed Caleb son of Jephunneh and gave him Hebron as his inheritance. 14 So Hebron has belonged to Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite ever since, because he followed the Lord, the God of Israel, wholeheartedly. 15 (Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba after Arba, who was the greatest man among the Anakites.)
Then the land had rest from war.

“Some friends leave the footprints of their footsteps in your heart.” [Eleanor Roosevelt]. One of the most popular names since 2012 for boys has been the name Caleb. Its Hebrew roots connote fidelity, like that of a dog to its master. Caleb was faithful to the mission to investigate the territory, he was true to his own opinion of it even though almost all of his companions were extremely pessimistic about the giants who inhabited the earth, not only that, but he also trusted God’s faithfulness. Forty-five years had passed, and he is as strong as when Moses sent him [verse 11], now he wants to claim the promise that Moses had then made to him. He asks for Mount Hebron for himself. The word Hebron derives from the Hebrew word “haver” meaning friend, a term that is associated with the patriarch Abraham because he was called God’s friend. “Making a hundred friends is not a miracle. The miracle is to make a single friend who will be by your side even when hundreds are against you.” [John Spence]. We applaud the dedication of first responders who provide immediate aid in situations of national emergency, rescuing people, delivering food or working in places of danger of contamination to save the lives of others. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, …” [Charles Dickens]. Do you know someone who is going through a crisis? Your help and your support can turn the worst of times into the best of times because someone will have discovered in you a faithful friend.
