1 En aquellos días, al aumentar el número de los discípulos, se quejaron los judíos de habla griega contra los de habla hebrea de que sus viudas eran desatendidas en la distribución diaria de los alimentos. 2 Así que los doce reunieron a toda la comunidad de discípulos y les dijeron: «No está bien que nosotros los apóstoles descuidemos el ministerio de la palabra de Dios para servir las mesas. 3 Hermanos, escojan de entre ustedes a siete hombres de buena reputación, llenos del Espíritu y de sabiduría, para encargarles esta responsabilidad. 4 Así nosotros nos dedicaremos de lleno a la oración y al ministerio de la palabra».

5 Esta propuesta agradó a toda la asamblea. Escogieron a Esteban, hombre lleno de fe y del Espíritu Santo, y a Felipe, a Prócoro, a Nicanor, a Timón, a Parmenas y a Nicolás, que era de Antioquía y se había convertido al judaísmo. 6 Los presentaron a los apóstoles, quienes oraron y les impusieron las manos.

7 Y la palabra de Dios se difundía: el número de los discípulos aumentaba considerablemente en Jerusalén e incluso muchos de los sacerdotes obedecían a la fe.

Arresto de Esteban
8 Esteban, hombre lleno de la gracia y del poder de Dios, hacía grandes prodigios y señales entre el pueblo. 9 Discutían con él ciertos individuos de la sinagoga llamada de los Libertos, donde había judíos de Cirene y de Alejandría, de Cilicia y de la provincia de Asia. 10 Como no podían hacer frente a la sabiduría ni al Espíritu con que hablaba Esteban, 11 instigaron a unos hombres a decir: «Hemos oído a Esteban blasfemar contra Moisés y contra Dios».

12 Agitaron al pueblo, a los líderes religiosos y a los maestros de la Ley. Se apoderaron de Esteban y lo llevaron ante el Consejo. 13 Presentaron testigos falsos que declararon: «Este hombre no deja de hablar contra este lugar santo y contra la Ley. 14 Le hemos oído decir que ese Jesús de Nazaret destruirá este lugar y cambiará las tradiciones que nos dejó Moisés».

15 Todos los que estaban sentados en el Consejo fijaron la mirada en Esteban y vieron que su rostro se parecía al de un ángel.

“En aquellos días … se quejaron los judíos … Así que los doce reunieron a toda la comunidad de discípulos y les dijeron: «No está bien que nosotros los apóstoles descuidemos el ministerio de la palabra de Dios para servir las mesas.” [verses 1 and 2, NIV]. Lo más importante es que lo más importante siga siendo lo más importante [Steven Covey]. A veces porque no hay quien lo haga, otras veces porque no sabemos decir que no, y aún otras veces porque nadie lo puede hacer tan bien como nosotros, entre otras razones, nos metemos en una rueda de actividad que gira cada vez más rápido y de la cual es también cada vez más difícil bajarse. No solo nos eleva el estrés, y nos lleva también al agotamiento físico y al desaliento, sino que, además: a) descuidamos lo principal, b) nos sentimos mal por no poder cumplir con todo lo que nos propusimos hacer, y c) causa descontento a nuestro alrededor. También los Apóstoles cometieron el mismo error, pero nos dejaron un buen ejemplo. Buscaron ayuda inmediatamente y se dedicaron a lo que Dios les había llamado a hacer: ocuparse en la Palabra de Dios. No todos son llamados a predicar o a enseñar, pero todos hemos sido llamados a servir al prójimo, de una o de mil maneras. Lo importante es que hagas aquello para lo cual has sido llamado. Nota los requisitos para servir a las mesas: buena reputación, llenos del Espíritu y de sabiduría. Sobre aquellos siete los Apóstoles impusieron las manos en señal de aprobación. Que el Señor Jesús ponga Sus manos sobre ti y tu misión de servicio.

Acts 6: The Choosing of the Seven.

1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Hellenistic Jews[a] among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2 So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3 Brothers and sisters, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4 and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”

5 This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6 They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.

7 So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to the faith.

Stephen Seized
8 Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, performed great wonders and signs among the people. 9 Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and Asia—who began to argue with Stephen. 10 But they could not stand up against the wisdom the Spirit gave him as he spoke.

11 Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have heard Stephen speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God.”

12 So they stirred up the people and the elders and the teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13 They produced false witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking against this holy place and against the law. 14 For we have heard him say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs Moses handed down to us.”

15 All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel.

“In those days … the Hellenistic Jews complained … So, the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.” [verses 1 and 2, NIV]. The main thing is to keep the main thing as the main thing [Steven Covey]. Sometimes because there is no one else to do it, other times because we do not know how to say no, yet other times because no one else can do it as well as we do it, among other reasons, we get into a wheel of activity that spins faster and faster and of which it is also increasingly difficult to get off of. Not only does it lead us to stress, physical exhaustion and discouragement, but: a) we neglect the main thing, b) we feel bad about not being able to complete all that we set out to do, and c) causes dissatisfaction around us. The Apostles also made the same mistake, but they set a good example for us. They sought help immediately and devoted themselves to what God had called them to do: to engage in the Word of God. Not all are called to preach or teach, but we have all been called to serve our neighbor, in one or in a thousand ways. The important thing is that you do what you’ve been called to do. Note the requirements for serving the tables: good reputation, filled with the Spirit and wisdom. On those seven the Apostles laid their hands on as a sign of approval. May the Lord Jesus lay His hands upon you and your mission of service.
