La toma de Jericó
6 Ahora, Jericó estaba cerrada, bien cerrada, a causa de los hijos de Israel; nadie entraba ni salía. 2 Mas Jehová dijo a Josué: Mira, yo he entregado en tu mano a Jericó y a su rey, con sus varones de guerra. 3 Rodearéis, pues, la ciudad todos los hombres de guerra, yendo alrededor de la ciudad una vez; y esto haréis durante seis días. 4 Y siete sacerdotes llevarán siete bocinas de cuernos de carnero delante del arca; y al séptimo día daréis siete vueltas a la ciudad, y los sacerdotes tocarán las bocinas. 5 Y cuando toquen prolongadamente el cuerno de carnero, así que oigáis el sonido de la bocina, todo el pueblo gritará a gran voz, y el muro de la ciudad caerá; entonces subirá el pueblo, cada uno derecho hacia adelante. 6 Llamando, pues, Josué hijo de Nun a los sacerdotes, les dijo: Llevad el arca del pacto, y siete sacerdotes lleven bocinas de cuerno de carnero delante del arca de Jehová. 7 Y dijo al pueblo: Pasad, y rodead la ciudad; y los que están armados pasarán delante del arca de Jehová.
8 Y así que Josué hubo hablado al pueblo, los siete sacerdotes, llevando las siete bocinas de cuerno de carnero, pasaron delante del arca de Jehová, y tocaron las bocinas; y el arca del pacto de Jehová los seguía. 9 Y los hombres armados iban delante de los sacerdotes que tocaban las bocinas, y la retaguardia iba tras el arca, mientras las bocinas sonaban continuamente. 10 Y Josué mandó al pueblo, diciendo: Vosotros no gritaréis, ni se oirá vuestra voz, ni saldrá palabra de vuestra boca, hasta el día que yo os diga: Gritad; entonces gritaréis. 11 Así que él hizo que el arca de Jehová diera una vuelta alrededor de la ciudad, y volvieron luego al campamento, y allí pasaron la noche.
12 Y Josué se levantó de mañana, y los sacerdotes tomaron el arca de Jehová. 13 Y los siete sacerdotes, llevando las siete bocinas de cuerno de carnero, fueron delante del arca de Jehová, andando siempre y tocando las bocinas; y los hombres armados iban delante de ellos, y la retaguardia iba tras el arca de Jehová, mientras las bocinas tocaban continuamente. 14 Así dieron otra vuelta a la ciudad el segundo día, y volvieron al campamento; y de esta manera hicieron durante seis días.
15 Al séptimo día se levantaron al despuntar el alba, y dieron vuelta a la ciudad de la misma manera siete veces; solamente este día dieron vuelta alrededor de ella siete veces. 16 Y cuando los sacerdotes tocaron las bocinas la séptima vez, Josué dijo al pueblo: Gritad, porque Jehová os ha entregado la ciudad. 17 Y será la ciudad anatema a Jehová, con todas las cosas que están en ella; solamente Rahab la ramera vivirá, con todos los que estén en casa con ella, por cuanto escondió a los mensajeros que enviamos. 18 Pero vosotros guardaos del anatema; ni toquéis, ni toméis alguna cosa del anatema, no sea que hagáis anatema el campamento de Israel, y lo turbéis. 19 Mas toda la plata y el oro, y los utensilios de bronce y de hierro, sean consagrados a Jehová, y entren en el tesoro de Jehová. 20 Entonces el pueblo gritó, y los sacerdotes tocaron las bocinas; y aconteció que cuando el pueblo hubo oído el sonido de la bocina, gritó con gran vocerío, y el muro se derrumbó. El pueblo subió luego a la ciudad, cada uno derecho hacia adelante, y la tomaron. 21 Y destruyeron a filo de espada todo lo que en la ciudad había; hombres y mujeres, jóvenes y viejos, hasta los bueyes, las ovejas, y los asnos.
22 Mas Josué dijo a los dos hombres que habían reconocido la tierra: Entrad en casa de la mujer ramera, y haced salir de allí a la mujer y a todo lo que fuere suyo, como lo jurasteis. 23 Y los espías entraron y sacaron a Rahab, a su padre, a su madre, a sus hermanos y todo lo que era suyo; y también sacaron a toda su parentela, y los pusieron fuera del campamento de Israel. 24 Y consumieron con fuego la ciudad, y todo lo que en ella había; solamente pusieron en el tesoro de la casa de Jehová la plata y el oro, y los utensilios de bronce y de hierro. 25 Mas Josué salvó la vida a Rahab la ramera, y a la casa de su padre, y a todo lo que ella tenía; y habitó ella entre los israelitas hasta hoy, por cuanto escondió a los mensajeros que Josué había enviado a reconocer a Jericó.
26 En aquel tiempo hizo Josué un juramento, diciendo: Maldito delante de Jehová el hombre que se levantare y reedificare esta ciudad de Jericó. Sobre su primogénito eche los cimientos de ella, y sobre su hijo menor asiente sus puertas.
27 Estaba, pues, Jehová con Josué, y su nombre se divulgó por toda la tierra.

“Las puertas de Jericó estaban bien aseguradas por temor, nadie podía salir o entrar.” [versículo 1, Nueva Version Internacional]. Muchas veces, en momentos de emergencias nacionales hay “toque de queda” en nuestros países. En esas situaciones las fuerzas del orden, como la policía o el ejército, suelen supervisar el cumplimiento de esta medida que paraliza un país entero. El temor produce pánico y el pánico paraliza. “Lo único que debemos temer es al miedo mismo.” [Franklin D. Roosevelt]. “De todos los mentirosos del mundo, a veces los peores son nuestros propios miedos”. [ Rudyard Kipling]. El temor no los salvó. Las murallas cayeron derribadas. ¿Habrá sido la marcha silenciosa? ¿Habrá sido el sonido de las trompetas? ¿Habrán sido los gritos? El arca, símbolo de la presencia de Dios, estaba en medio [versículo 4]. Dios intervino. Ellos cerraron las puertas; es bueno tomar precauciones, no debemos ser negligentes, pero aún más importante es unirnos en oración intercediendo tanto por nosotros como también por tantas otras personas alrededor del mundo. Una observación: ellos gritaron [porque Dios así les había mandado], nosotros en lugar de gritar, ¡mejor doblemos nuestras rodillas y pongámonos a orar! No te desesperes, no pierdas las esperanzas, no desmayes, ¡estamos del lado de Dios! ¡Dios derribará las murallas que hoy tanto temes! Solo Él puede hacerlo. “Puede hacerlo otra vez; si Dios ha hecho un milagro, puede hacerlo otra vez. Joshua 6: The Destruction of Jericho.
1 Now the gates of Jericho were securely barred because of the Israelites. No one went out and no one came in.
2 Then the Lord said to Joshua, “See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. 3 March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. 4 Have seven priests carry trumpets of rams’ horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times, with the priests blowing the trumpets. 5 When you hear them sound a long blast on the trumpets, have the whole army give a loud shout; then the wall of the city will collapse and the army will go up, everyone straight in.”
6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”
8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.
12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.
15 On the seventh day, they got up at daybreak and marched around the city seven times in the same manner, except that on that day they circled the city seven times. 16 The seventh time around, when the priests sounded the trumpet blast, Joshua commanded the army, “Shout! For the Lord has given you the city! 17 The city and all that is in it are to be devoted[a] to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and all who are with her in her house shall be spared, because she hid the spies we sent. 18 But keep away from the devoted things, so that you will not bring about your own destruction by taking any of them. Otherwise you will make the camp of Israel liable to destruction and bring trouble on it. 19 All the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron are sacred to the Lord and must go into his treasury.”
20 When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. 21 They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.
22 Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
26 At that time Joshua pronounced this solemn oath: “Cursed before the Lord is the one who undertakes to rebuild this city, Jericho:
“At the cost of his firstborn son
he will lay its foundations;
at the cost of his youngest
he will set up its gates.”
27 So the Lord was with Joshua, and his fame spread throughout the land.

” The gates of Jericho were kept tightly shut because the people were afraid of the Israelis; no one was allowed to go in or out.” [verse 1, Living Bible]. Often in times of national emergencies there is a “curfew” in our countries. In such situations, law enforcement agencies, such as the police or the army, often monitor compliance with this measure, which paralyzes an entire country. Fear produces panic and panic paralyzes us. “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” [Franklin D. Roosevelt]. “Of all the liars in the world, sometimes the worst are our own fears.” [Rudyard Kipling]. Fear did not save them. But the walls fell down. Was it the silent march? Was it the trumpets’ sound? Was it their shouting? The ark, symbol of God’s presence, was in the middle [verse 4]. God intervened. The gates were tightly shut; It is good to take precautions, we must not be negligent, but even more important is to join in prayer interceding both for ourselves and also for so many other people around the world. An observation: they shouted [because God had commanded them to do so]; instead of shouting, we better bend our knees and start praying! Do not despair, do not lose hope, do not lose heart, we are on God’s side! God will tear down the walls that you fear so much today! Only He can do it. “He can do it again; if God has done a miracle, He can do it again. His great power is the same, I am sure. If God has done a miracle, He can do it again!” [author unknown].
