Números 25: Israel acude a Baal-peor.

1 Mientras los israelitas acampaban en Sitín, comenzaron a entregarse a la inmoralidad sexual con las mujeres moabitas, 2 las cuales los invitaban a participar en los sacrificios a sus dioses. Los israelitas comían de esos sacrificios y se postraban ante esos dioses. 3 Esto los llevó a unirse al culto de Baal Peor. Por tanto, la ira del Señor se encendió contra ellos.

4 Entonces el Señor dijo a Moisés: «Toma a todos los jefes del pueblo y ahórcalos en mi presencia a plena luz del día, para que el furor de mi ira se aparte de Israel».

5 Moisés ordenó a los jueces de Israel: «Maten a los hombres bajo su mando que hayan rendido culto a Baal Peor».

6 Mientras el pueblo lloraba a la entrada de la Tienda de reunión, un israelita trajo a una madianita y, en presencia de Moisés y de toda la comunidad israelita, tuvo el descaro de presentársela a su familia. 7 De esto se dio cuenta el sacerdote Finés, que era hijo de Eleazar y nieto del sacerdote Aarón. Finés abandonó la asamblea y lanza en mano, 8 siguió al hombre, entró en su tienda y atravesó al israelita y a la mujer.[a] De esta forma cesó la plaga que se había desatado contra los israelitas. 9 Con todo, los que murieron a causa de la plaga fueron veinticuatro mil.

10 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 11 «Finés, hijo de Eleazar y nieto del sacerdote Aarón, ha hecho que mi ira se aparte de los israelitas, pues ha actuado con el mismo celo que yo habría tenido por mi honor. Por eso no destruí a los israelitas con el furor de mi celo. 12 Dile, pues, a Finés que yo le concedo mi pacto de paz, 13 por medio del cual él y sus descendientes gozarán de un sacerdocio eterno, ya que defendió celosamente mi honor y presentó ofrendas para el perdón de los israelitas».

14 El hombre que fue atravesado junto con la madianita se llamaba Zimri, hijo de Salu, y era jefe de una familia de la tribu de Simeón. 15 La madianita se llamaba Cozbí, y era hija de Zur, jefe de una familia de Madián.

16 El Señor dijo a Moisés: 17 «Ataca a los madianitas y mátalos, 18 porque ellos también los atacaron a ustedes con sus artimañas, pues en Baal Peor los sedujeron, como en el caso de Cozbí, la hija del jefe madianita que fue muerta el día de la plaga en Baal Peor».

“Cuando los israelitas se establecieron en Sitim, sus hombres empezaron a corromperse con las mujeres moabitas, las cuales los invitaban a los sacrificios que ofrecían a sus dioses. Los israelitas tomaban parte en esas comidas y adoraban a los dioses de las moabitas, y así se dejaron arrastrar al culto de Baal-peor.” [versículos 1 al 3, Dios Habla Hoy]. Cuidado con la Puerta de atrás! Balaam no los maldijo pero aunque este capítulo no lo expresa, su influencia produjo resultados muy nefastos. A la Iglesia de Pérgamo, Jesús les dice: “Pero tengo unas pocas cosas contra ti, porque tienes ahí a los que mantienen la doctrina de Balaam, que enseñaba a Balac a poner tropiezo ante los Israelitas, a comer cosas sacrificadas a los ídolos y a cometer actos de inmoralidad. El enemigo entró por la puerta de atrás! Con mucha razón el autor de la Epístola a los Hebreos nos advierte: “Por lo tanto, es necesario que prestemos más atención al mensaje que hemos oído, no sea que nos extraviemos.” [Hebreos 2:1 Version Nueva Biblia Viva]. Como un bote cuyas amarras se soltaron y se desliza lentamente. No así el cristiano que se aferra a la esperanza. “Esta esperanza mantiene firme y segura nuestra alma, igual que el ancla mantiene firme al barco”. [Hebreos 6:19 Versión Dios Habla Hoy]. “La esperanza ve lo invisible, siente lo intangible y logra lo imposible.” [Helen Keller].

Numbers 25: Balaam’s Fourth Message.

1 While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with Moabite women, 2 who invited them to the sacrifices to their gods. The people ate the sacrificial meal and bowed down before these gods. 3 So Israel yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor. And the Lord’s anger burned against them.

4 The Lord said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of these people, kill them and expose them in broad daylight before the Lord, so that the Lord’s fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

5 So Moses said to Israel’s judges, “Each of you must put to death those of your people who have yoked themselves to the Baal of Peor.”

6 Then an Israelite man brought into the camp a Midianite woman right before the eyes of Moses and the whole assembly of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 7 When Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, saw this, he left the assembly, took a spear in his hand 8 and followed the Israelite into the tent. He drove the spear into both of them, right through the Israelite man and into the woman’s stomach. Then the plague against the Israelites was stopped; 9 but those who died in the plague numbered 24,000.

10 The Lord said to Moses, 11 “Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, the priest, has turned my anger away from the Israelites. Since he was as zealous for my honor among them as I am, I did not put an end to them in my zeal. 12 Therefore tell him I am making my covenant of peace with him. 13 He and his descendants will have a covenant of a lasting priesthood, because he was zealous for the honor of his God and made atonement for the Israelites.”

14 The name of the Israelite who was killed with the Midianite woman was Zimri son of Salu, the leader of a Simeonite family. 15 And the name of the Midianite woman who was put to death was Kozbi daughter of Zur, a tribal chief of a Midianite family.

16 The Lord said to Moses, 17 “Treat the Midianites as enemies and kill them. 18 They treated you as enemies when they deceived you in the Peor incident involving their sister Kozbi, the daughter of a Midianite leader, the woman who was killed when the plague came as a result of that incident.”

“When the Israelites settled in Shitim, their men began to be corrupted by the Moabite women, who invited them to the sacrifices they offered to their gods. The Israelites took part in these meals and worshipped the gods of the Moabites, and so they allowed themselves to be drawn into the worship of Baal-peor.” [verses 1 to 3, God speaks today]. Watch out for the Back Door! Balaam did not curse them, but although this chapter does not express it, their influence produced very disastrous results. To the Church in Pergamum, Jesus says: “But I have a few things against you, because you have there those who hold to the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balak to stumble before the Israelites, to eat things sacrificed to idols, and to commit acts of immorality. The enemy entered through the back door! The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews rightly warns us: “Therefore we must pay more attention to the message we have heard, lest we go astray.” [Hebrews 2:1 New Living Bible]. Like a boat whose moorings were loosened and it glides slowly. Not so the Christian who clings to hope. “This hope keeps our soul firm and secure, just as the anchor keeps the ship steady.” [Hebrews 6:19 God Speaks Today.] “Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible, and achieves the impossible.” [Helen Keller].
